Ernesto Soto studied fine arts and art history at the University of Los Andes (2016) and specialised in painting at the University of the Arts London (Camberwell College of Arts, 2025). He has exhibited his work and participated in residencies in Colombia and abroad and has experience in curating, archiving, as a studio assistant and as a teacher.
Ernesto uses painting in relation to landscape, a traditional genre that refers to the illusion of the environment. Like painting, our environment is inherently subjective; navigating it is an exercise in reflection, as it is our own experience—its signs and symbols—that guides us in making sense of its forms and thus navigating the world. It is paradoxical that we all identify personally with the place we share, and painting serves as a stage for us to become aware of the perspectives that inhabit a common place.
Residency at El Boga
My tentative goal during the residency is to create works that record an experience of mediation with different actors in a specific place and time. Without any prior knowledge of Mompox, I am interested in seeing the influence that the colonial and mercantile legacy has left today on the landscape, the ecosystem, and the social fabric of the town and its surroundings.
