Gil Gelpi is a Portuguese sculptor based in Barcelona. Gil holds a degree in Cinema from the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in Lisbon. In 2009, in the face of the economic and cultural crisis in his country, he decided to settle in Barcelona where he enrolled at the Escola Massana and studied sculpture. A grant from the
Lisbon City Council allowed him to do an artistic residency in Budapest, where he held his first solo exhibition at the Magyar Mahely Gallery. In 2011 he starts working as assistant to the sculptor Samuel Salcedo, with whom he has worked for 7 years as his main assistant. In 2013 he took up an artistic residency in Morocco. Since 2014 he exhibits in several galleries such as Artevistas, Galeria N2 and 3 Punts Galeria in Barcelona and Galeria Passevite in Lisbon, where he has had several solo and group exhibitions. In 2018 he began teaching sculpture courses at the Escuela de Cerámica de la Bisbal. In 2020, he carried out an artistic residency at the Konvent de Cal Rosal. In 2021 he holds the exhibition ‘Co[vu]s’ at the Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sabadell and at the Galeria Dual in Girona. In 2022 he exhibits at the Centre Cultural la Mercè, in Girona, and receives ‘Temporals’ support from the ICUB, together with the photographer Bàrbara Puigventós, to hold three exhibitions in three
three exhibitions in three civic centres in Barcelona.
El Boga Residence
Durign his residency at El Boga Gil seeks to explore the human body as a substance in a state of transformation, incorporating local materials. The result will be an exhibition.
