Martín, a Swiss and German citizen residing in Switzerland, held various positions within the Protestant (Lutheran/Reformed) church before retiring. He lived in Latin America for eight years and in North America for three.

Residence in El Boga

In Mompox, which he visited in 2024, he believes to have found the right place, surrounded by interesting and friendly people, to give and receive, to share art, everyday life and community service. Martin seeks to discover new horizons beyond the ecclesiastical sphere, devoting five weeks to painting and writing. He will explore the possibility of organising a public event on a topic of interest, for example, a session on the religious and cultural traditions of Christmas. If there is interest, he can offer courses and exercises in German or English, especially to those who work with tourists. He seeks to learn about the reality of the place, exchanging ideas and visions of life, crossing cultural, religious, age and gender boundaries.

In the Colombian Caribbean, as well as in the jungle of Suriname, he was struck by the tragedy of enslaved people, but also by the escape of some men, who founded communities of free people in remote places. Also, the theme of the Boga and the ‘Chronicle of a Death Foretold’ inspires him to paint. In Colombia, he wishes to paint a series of oil paintings on one of these themes, painting the symbolic, scenes that tell stories, inviting the observer to invent their own story. He will also write some memoirs, in the form of narratives of notable episodes from his 68 years of life.
