Valentina Frías Álvarez

//El Boga Scholarship

//November-December 2024

Multifaceted designer and artist, she was born in Colombia and grew up between the plains of the Caribbean and Bogotá. She studied Design at Universidad de los Andes and is the creator of Memorabilia, an autoethnographic process that delves into memory and brings memories into the sunlight. Her work focuses on creating for longevity by resignifying her family archive through upcycling, collective experiences, and analog media. She explores archives, collage, textiles, crafts, and analog photography, nourishing her work with found objects, discarded materials and intuitive processes. Additionally, she works as a consultant in the artisanal sector in Colombia, co-creating with indigenous and rural communities. She has participated in group exhibitions at Fondazione ICA Milano (2022) and Espacio Odeón (2023). Her work has been reviewed in Domus Magazine, Vogue Italia, Radio Nopal México, and BAK, basis voor actuele kunst. Valentina resignifies traditional narratives and crafts, creating spaces for memory and identity.

El Boga Residence

Memorandum N°1: Venting the Tatting

During her residency in Mompox, she will investigate the current development of the craft of tatting (frivolité), conducting an autoethnographic exercise to connect individual memory with collective memory. Additionally, she will contribute to the local textile archive, fostering dialogue between artisanal crafts and investigating the memory of the Momposinos who have a connection with this technique. She will explore cultural identity and promote sustainability through the use of local materials. Finally, through material experimentation, Valentina will generate a collective learning space aimed at revitalizing Mompox's cultural heritage and laying the foundations for future co-creations.
